This paper investigated the the association between high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol and coronary heart disease incidence in 6,500 men over a five year period.
The paper found that the higher your HDL cholesterol values, the less likely you are to have a heart attack, especially if you are a male over 50. Eating a high percentage of dietary fat increases HDL. See here and here
